Charles Burchfield

One of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967) continues to intrigue and inform the contemporary art world. His intensely personal, spiritualized view of the world resonates with artists who work in a variety of media, and his deeply felt, almost mystical sensibility has inspired curators and artists to revisit and reassess his many accomplishments. In 2009 Robert Gober organized a major retrospective for the Hammer Museum which traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art.
